Coal Pit

Central Otago

Coal Pit Logo

Coal Pit is a small family owned vineyard (12 hectares) on the beautiful north facing slopes of Gibbston in Central Otago just 20 minutes from Queenstown.

The vineyard was planted in 1994 making it one of the oldest vineyards in Gibbston with four hectares of Pinot Noir and two of Sauvignon Blanc.

Coal Pit is now host to a new industry, one of the few “single” vineyards in Gibbston where the grapes are grown, picked and crafted on site to express the distinct purity of the wines from this unique Central Otago terroir. Our on-site, state-of-the-art winery was designed by award winning architect Chris Kelly and completed in December 2008.

The Coal Pit vineyard in the Gibbston Valley grape-growing district takes its name from the historical Coal Pit site. The original Coal Pit provided coal to musterers, gold miners and pioneers alike in the early days of the Province as they passed over the Coal Pit Saddle. The coal being bagged at the pit, loaded onto drays and brought down Coal Pit Road to the valley.

The vineyard produces Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir and these wines consistently win Gold Awards at local and international competitions including the San Francisco Wine Awards and the Sydney International Wine Competition.
