Dry River Wines are widely regarded as some of the very best that New Zealand has to offer - and right across their entire spectrum of styles. Chief wine maker and Martinborough pioneer Dr Neil McCallum established Dry River in 1979. In 2002 he sold the winery and vineyards to New York businessman Julian Robertson and Californian viticulturalist Reg Oliver, who owned the El Molino winery in St Helena. Top varieties include Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Riesling. These wines are so well regarded that they sell-out almost immediately on release, with wines sometimes being rationed to repeat buyers. This is one winery that has had little need of marketing or PR. In fact, the only way to purchase Dry River wines with certainty is to go on their carefully administered mailing list, but be warned, there is a waiting list and inactive mailing members are periodically "culled" to make way for those awaiting an opportunity to be "allowed" to purchase these great wines.
