Brightwater Vineyards makes Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir and Merlot wines from grapes grown on the family-owned vineyard. In 1992 Gary and Valley Neale returned home from working overseas determined to contribute to the growing reputation of New Zealand wines abroad. They purchased land near Nelson ideally suited to viticulture where the Waimea River once flowed – a spot characterised by good sun and free-draining alluvial gravels. In 1999 the Neale's produced their first wines under the Brightwater Vineyards label. Their focus is on aromatics and Pinot Noir. Early Brightwater vinatges have been well received - including gold for the 2005 Chardonnay at the 2006 Air New Zealand Wine Awards and the award for Champion Riesling at the 2006 Liquorland Top 100. Brightwater wines represent good value for money. If passing by be sure to pay a visit.
