Karikari Estate is situated on the Karikari peninsula near Kaitaia. It is New Zealand’s northern most winery and commands a spectacular view of the peninsula looking out to the Pacific ocean.
It is attached to the exclusive and world renowned Carrington Estate golf course and luxury retreat (but open to public visitors). The vineyard was established in 1998 by father and son combination Bob and Ben Haig and long time friend Paul Kelly. The first wine was produced in 2003 by Kim Crawford. Grapes grown are mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah – varieties well suited to a climate that favors early and long ripening. Under the hand of winemaker Ben Dugdale (ex Coopers Creek, Dry River and Matakana Estate) the vineyard is showing considerable promise and will not suffer from lack of investment by its owners.
If visiting the Far North, Karikari Estate is a must visit location.
