Obsidian

Auckland

Obsidian logo

The Obsidian vineyard was established in 1993 with the single objective of producing a great Bordeaux-style red. The 17-hectare Obsidian vineyard nestles in the coastal hills of the Onetangi viticultural area. Ten vineyards are now located in the surrounding valley, with the renowned "Stonyridge" vineyard a near neighbour.

In 2000 a second label, Weeping Sands, was introduced. Weeping Sands is made with the same meticulous care and attention as Obsidian, but for earlier drinking.

Our approach to viticulture and winemaking is simple. We strive to grow consistently ripe, concentrated, flavourful grapes and to craft them into superb wines for drinking and cellaring.

Yields are kept deliberately low to maximise quality. As a result only a limited number of cases of Obsidian are produced each year, though this varies naturally with the vintage conditions. The combined annual production of Obsidian and Weeping Sands is typically about 1500 - 2000 cases. A proportion of Obsidian finds its way to export markets including the UK, USA, Canada, Asia, Europe and Australia.
