Te Mata Estate is New Zealand’s oldest winery and always impresses with the sheer consistency, quality and value of its wines. Te Mata Estate originated as part of Te Mata Station, a large pastoral land holding established by English immigrant John Chambers in 1854. His third son, Bernard, influenced by the comments from visitors that the hills were suitable for grape growing, planted vines in 1892. Wine was first made from those grapes in 1896. Under the current direction of John Buck, Te Mata Estate now makes some of New Zealand's very best Bordeaux style wine. Top of the range is Coleraine, a Bordeaux style Cabernet Merlot regarded by many as New Zealand's best red wine. Almost as good, but a little more affordable, is Awatea, another Cabernet Merlot. Another wine to die for is Te Mata's Elston Chardonnay. Also of note is Te Mata Estate’s Bullnose Syrah and its Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc. Over recent years Te Mata Estate has established a new 80 hectare vineyard on the Woodthorpe Terraces. Wines made from these younger vines are sold under the Woodthorpe brand. Te Mata also produces a range of affordable drink now wines under the Rymer’s Change brand.

Te Mata Estate wines are available direct from the winery, by internet, from most wine outlets and good restaurants and exported to Australia, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Germany.
