Claire and Mike Allan were drawn to Marlborough by the potential for intense fruit flavours and the promise of rounded, elegant wines. They bought the land in 1990 and started making wine as Huia in 1996.
At Huia vineyard, the creation of good wine and a commitment to the environment go hand in hand. The result is elegant, hand crafted wines that go to help define the potential of Marlborough.
With a focus on organics and biodynamics, Huia makes beautiful wines for today, while protecting the vitality of the soils for future generations.
There are three blocks that comprise Huias estate vineyards.
All three blocks are farmed organically and bio-dynamically with a view to long term improvements in soil structure, biodiversity and providing a healthy environment for everybody who works them.
Home block is 9 hectares and is the original planting where the winery and family home are also located. Home comprises Sauvignon Blanc planted in 1994 with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay planted in 1995. Shipley block is the second vineyard and is directly across the road from Home. This was planted in 2005 with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris.
Both blocks are situated in Marlboroughs Rapaura district on what is known as the Golden Mile. This is one of Marlboroughs most premium sites with its free draining alluvial silts and undulating stony nature, close to the Wairau River and is well in the lee of the Richmond Range.
Sauvignon Blanc off these two vineyards typically has riper tropical notes than the cooler areas of Marlborough. The undulating stony nature and the mix of richer silts in both blocks create a medley of flavours - even in the same row of grapes.
Winsome block is 15 hectares situated on the south east outskirts of Blenheim. It has totally different features to the Rapaura sites. The soils are deep rich clay. The vineyard is situated up under the Wither Hills, quite close to the sea, which has a dramatic cooling effect upon the area.
