New Zealand is world renowned for its beautiful, unspoilt landscape and clean, natural environment. A country where quality is revered over quantity, and where people expect, demand and get the very best from their food and wine producers.
This small, isolated nation enjoys an enviable combination of abundant sunshine, clean rainwater, diverse terrains and myriad soil types, making it ideal for grape growing and leading to it becoming one of the world’s most respected premium wine producers.
New Zealand wine has developed its own distinctive style, which can be said to blend some of the best traditional European characters with a particular freshness and vibrancy that sets it apart and makes its wines incomparably Kiwi.
Richard Robson - The Winemaker
Richard Robson is a successful Australian winemaker who moved to New Zealand to take over the winemaking reins at Matakana Estate in early 2007.
He grew up in Sydney where, under the influence of a respected wine importer and distributor and family friend, he first developed his passion for wine. After studying at the renowned Charles Sturt University in New South Wales, Richard made wine for a number of respected Australian wineries, including Charles Melton, Yalumba and Plantagenet, where he was Chief Winemaker before joining Matakana Estate. Richard has also made wine in the Rhone Valley area of France, where he worked with the Chef de Cave of Gabriel Meffre, and ran their family winery for a spell.
Since taking over at Matakana, Richard has focused on honing and refining the estate's classically-styled varietals and blends to a consistently high level, and his wines regularly achieve national and international awards.
Richard lives locally with his wife and two young sons and he describes Matakana as one of the most wonderful places in the world, not only for growing grapes but for enjoying life.
Since it was established more than 30 years ago, Matakana Estate has striven to produce wines that best express the fruit characters and terroir from the finest premium grapes available. The winery is situated in the heart of Matakana, a hidden gem of a wine region, which lies between rolling green hills and perfect sandy beaches less than an hour's drive north of Auckland. Rich in culture, the area attracts many discerning visitors to enjoy its premium wines, gourmet foods and thriving artistic community.
Matakana Estate was founded initially, like many respected New Zealand wineries, by descendants of Croatian migrants, whose forefathers had sailed to New Zealand more than 100 years ago with ambitions of making fine wine. Their first vineyards during that time were planted in Kaitaia, a groundbreaking beginning for the wine industry in that region then, later on, the family chose Matakana for its most substantial vineyards and thus Matakana Estate was founded.
From the outset, Matakana Estate established itself as a serious contender on the world wine scene, doing well in blind tasting competitions in London, and winning a number of awards in international wine competitions, a pattern of achievement that has grown and continues to the current day. Matakana Estate wines have even enjoyed the honour of being personally selected by the British Royal family on visits to the country.
