Matua Wines

It’s hard to separate New Zealand and Sauvignon Blanc these days, but we were the first to put them together, planting the first Sauvignon Blanc in 1969 and producing our first bottle in 1974.

In the next few years, winemakers Ross and Bill Spence quickly gained a reputation for innovative, award-winning New Zealand wines – including the first New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.

You could say we’ve changed the way the world drinks wine. Has it gone to our heads? Hardly. But it has fired us up to do more.

Matua began with a vision shared by Bill and Ross Spence – to revolutionise the New Zealand wine industry by making wines with the best fruit from the best vineyards, a philosophy that still stands today and has earned us international recognition for our pioneering work.

Today, Matua Wines produces a wide range of distinctive wines, these innovative, award-winning New Zealand wines are now enjoyed all over the world.

Winemaker

Nikolai St George - Chief Winemaker

As well as winning a bunch of awards for great Matua wines, Nikolai has just scored a big one for himself: New Zealand Winemaker of the Year at the 2013 Royal Easter Wine Show.

Having grown up in King Country on a sheep and cattle farm, Nikolai is a country boy at heart. He saw winemaking as a way of working with the land without doing the long hours his dad did, an ambition that didn’t go quite to plan.

While he has formal qualifications in viticulture and winemaking, Nikolai maintains the real lessons are learned on the job and from other winemakers. In that case, it’s one major education he has, with 20 vintages under his belt: first at Goldwater Estate on Waiheke Island; then Amisfield in Central Otago, plus stints in France, Chile, and the U.S.

When he’s not in the vineyard or the winery, you can find Nikolai in the ocean grabbing a bite to eat – crays, scallops, abalone, fish – a chilled-out way to get produce just as nature intended. An approach he takes to his wine making.

Nikolai is extremely choosy about wine as you’d imagine, but he has a particular interest in champagne and how the French manage to coax great wine from underripe fruit.

Greg Rowden - Winemaker

Greg is a lover of all the good things in life – food, coffee and wine. He realised this all the way back in high school when he had the ingenious idea to contact Matua for some career guidance. At the time Mark Robertson, now TWE’s chief winemaker, gave him a tip: study science. So Greg did exactly that, gaining a Masters Degree in winemaking.

Greg was quick to discover the reality of a career in wine isn’t as glamorous as he first thought. Cleaning tanks is hard work. But despite the level of cleaning involved, he kept at it, even venturing over to work on vintages in France.

Outside of work, Greg is a boating enthusiast from way back (he comes from a family of boaters). There’s no better pastime for Greg than getting the family out on the boat, playing sport, enjoying food and relaxing. And these days family is a big focus for Greg, having recently become a proud new dad.

Now Greg gets to experiment and push the conventions of winemaking. He recently focussed on building complexity and texture into our Chardonnays - he figured so much time is spent talking about the aroma and flavour of wine, why not focus more on the texture?

But, we know the real reason Greg’s been focussing on our Chardonnays – it’s his favourite drop!
