Bond Estate is in the Onetangi wine-growing region and comprises the 4.2 hectare Miro Vineyard and the outstanding Tapas restaurant called Casita Miro. Miro is the closest vineyard to Onetangi Beach, a summer playground for holiday makers. Views from the vineyard are spectacular, looking out over the vines, the village and the sea. Grapes in the region ripen to a rare succulent intensity in the hot summer sun. The mineral rich soil provides the vines with flavour-enhancing elements. Red grapes such as Syrah and Bordeaux varietals are our focus here but we also grow beautiful Pinot Gris and a small amount of Viognier for blending.
The Vineyard is managed on near-organic principles and the wines are pure and residue free. Miro Vineyard practises sustainable viticulture. We have created a new wetland on the vineyard which is now home to ducks and native birds. The vineyard is very steep with 80% north facing slopes. When you visit you will likely meet the vineyard dog. He is called Coke who will adore you if you throw him a stick. Near harvest time, he chases birds away from the grapes.
The wine is made by Barnett Bond and Cat Vosper on property. They have the assistance of Hungarian winemaker Balasz Haga. This is the A Team and they are committed to producing outstanding and pure appealing wines, and freshly home grown food for the Tapas restaurant. This is truly one of the most favoured vineyard sites in New Zealand.
From sun kissed slopes by the sea on the island of Waiheke comes the grape. From France, the idea and the inspiration for a new refreshing and stimulating taste experience. Flavours of the summer berry fruit are captured in every bottle of Madame Rouge. This fine aperitif is made from 100% red grapes grown on Waiheke Island. The first taste will suggest a full bodied, rich and vivacious summer affair. She is heady like champagne and you should let her lead you along byways that you will never glimpse without her. She is the first truly iconic New Zealand aperitif. Because of the purity of the vinification, those who sip a glass have reported a sense of wellbeing. Madame Rouge is becoming recognized outside her current circle of friends who already know she is the most stylish aperitif. Always offer your friends a small glass as they arrive. Savoire faire.
Barnett and Cat have been growing grapes and making wine on the 'Bond Estate' for 20 years. Over recent years, Barnett has focused on the grapes and Cat on the award winning Casita Miro Restaurant. Make sure to check the progress on Barnett's 'Gaudi-esque' mosaic wall next time you are at the restaurant. Their three children George, Harrison and Miro were born in to slavery and have grown up working on the vineyards and at the restaurant. The have recently been granted their freedom.
