Mount Michael Wines, at the breathtakingly beautiful Lowburn, Central Otago, presents perfect growing conditions for Pinot Noir with its extremes of temperature and mineral rich soils. Our sunny north-easterly aspect on a gentle slope running down to the lake provides all the right elements for reducing the risk of frost.
The estate is boutique by any standard, producing around 3,000 cases of wine annually. Our vines are hand-tended with yields kept low to augment concentration in the fruit.
Mount Michael Vineyard is planted in 7.5 hectares of primarily Pinot Noir with a small amount of Pinot Gris. The Pinot Noir consists of 4 clones: Clone 5, Dujon Clones 115 and 667 and Clone Abel.
Peter Morrison and Debbie Laycock bought the vineyard in 2004 and have, since then, put all of their energy and passion into developing it, building the brand and engaging with some of the best technical people in the business. In 2011 the business was opened further to friends in Hong Kong and Singapore who have bought into the vineyard and the business bringing marketing and other expertise to the table as well as leverage into the Hong Kong, Singapore and broader Asian markets.
