Mud House

Twenty years ago, our founders arrived in Marlborough and fell in love with the place. After preparing the land and planting vines, they built a house to live in, from the local earth. That home became our brand.

Today, as proud New Zealanders, we make consistently beautiful wines for people who seek new experiences and embrace fresh ideas. Our passion is reflected in an enviable track record that has seen our wines consistently revered at home and recognised around the world. Look for our distinctive labels wherever you are in the world, and celebrate your taste for adventure.

The Winemakers

NADINE WORLEY - Winemaker

Originally from South Australia, Nadine studied oenology for four years at Adelaide University. After completing her degree, she began her career in Australia working with cool climate varietals in Victoria and the Adelaide Hills before spending two vintages at a family winery in Italy and a vintage in Oregon USA.

A preference for cool climate winemaking led Nadine to Marlborough and to the Mud House team where she has been since 2006. During her time with us, Nadine has been promoted from Assistant Winemaker to Winemaker.

Nadine speaks with great affection about the Mud House vineyards across the South Island of New Zealand. The Pinot Noir from Central Otago, Pinot Gris and Riesling from Waipara and of course Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough. “It’s such a treat to be able to make wines from New Zealand’s three most exciting wine regions,” Nadine says.

Sauvignon Blanc is one of Nadine's favourite wines to drink and craft. She talks of there being nothing better than the smell of a perfect Sauvignon Blanc ferment. “Lift the lid on the tank and behind the yeast will be pungent aromas of citrus, passionfruit and guava. That’s when you know it’s going to be good.”

BEN GLOVER - Group Winemaker

Thankfully for the wine industry, after growing up on a dairy farm as one of four children, Ben Glover chose a career in wine, not farming.

After graduating from Canterbury University with a Marketing degree and then a Post Graduate degree in Oenology from Lincoln University, Ben embarked on an exponential ride of fifteen vintages with the Lion Nathan’s wine brands. He has recently been named Chair of the highly acclaimed Pinot Noir 2017 Celebration, to be held in Wellington, New Zealand; and is a board member for Wine Marlborough.

His selection as the New Zealand representative scholar for the inaugural Len Evans tutorial in 2001 gained Ben immense insight and resource for his future endeavours. Ben also has over 16 years of wine show judging, something that is testament to his dedication and craft - both as a winemaker and as an appreciative wine drinker.

Ben has a passion for making pure, elegant, innovative wines, in particular - Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. "It’s exciting being involved with Mud House and their strategic viticultural and winemaking resources in Central Otago, Waipara and Marlborough. Being associated with an exciting group of innovative people within this dynamic, focused team creates a real buzz - this is what winemaking is all about!”

Our Vineyards

THE WOOLSHED VINEYARD, MARLBOROUGH

The vineyard is situated west of Blenheim in the shelter of a steep sided triangular hill called the “Delta”. This feature protects the vineyard from the frosts in spring and the different aspects of the slope produce fruit which makes for exciting blending options. Named after the woolshed building which remains on the property from the original farm station.

WAIPARA VALLEY VINEYARDS

The Waipara Valley is snuggled in the lee of the Teviotdale Hills, which provide protection from the cool ocean winds but open to warm Nor' Wester winds. The north facing, moderately sloping river terraces provide an ideal suntrap for grape ripening.

Abundant sunshine throughout the summer, combined with a long, dry and cool autumn helps produce unique concentrated Rieslings and Pinot Gris, our regional specialities. The Waipara Valley season is particularly long with bud burst starting at the end of September and harvest lasting until mid-May.

Soil types range from gravelly deposits close to the Waipara River, to heavier, limestone-derived clays on the east side of the valley.

The Home Block Vineyard

The Home Block's gravelly soils and minerality enhance the rich and spicy characters of our aromatic wines. We are one of the first and most successful producers to plant Pinot Gris Lincoln-Berry Smith clone which we believe produce higher quality Pinot Gris. We have some of the oldest vines planted of this clone in New Zealand and are now supplying others with their cuttings. Our older Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay,17 years old, are on their own roots. This vineyard is our home, located right behind the winery.

CLAIM 431 VINEYARD, BENDIGO, CENTRAL OTAGO

Once a gold mining region, Bendigo is framed by ancient, dry hills and fanned by westerly winds. The soils have been formed from glaciers grinding up the schist rocks to smaller gravels and finer particles. These soils are rich in minerals, free draining and low in vigour so careful use of irrigation is required to maintain vine health.

The climate is the most continental in New Zealand with cold winters (making great skiing in nearby Wanaka) and hot dry summers. Rainfall is low with average of 450mm's per annum and in peak summer temperatures can exceed 35 degrees Celsius, however the much cooler nights maintain acidity and vitality in the Pinot Noir we produce. Claim 431 Vineyard was previously known as Golden Terraces.
