Odyssey Wines

Odyssey Wines is owned by Rebecca Salmond. Rebecca’s voyage into winemaking began at Massey University in New Zealand and Adelaide University’s Roseworthy College in Australia, where she graduated with a degree in Biotechnology and a Post Graduate Diploma in Winemaking Science. She then travelled and worked in some of the world’s finest wine and culinary regions: Burgundy, Bordeaux and Cote Rotie in France; Alto Adige and Sicily in Italy; Marlborough and Hawkes Bay in New Zealand. Rebecca launched her label Odyssey in 1994, with small amounts of premium wines.

Odyssey now has 25 acres of land in Marlborough’s Brancott Valley under vine. Rebecca’s well-honed philosophy sees her making only subtle adjustments to the wine, and using where appropriate the finest oaks. All wines are single vineyard. Odyssey Wines has garnered a number of accolades and awards.

Kym Watt joined Odyssey Wines in 2006 and runs the office and sales. It is Kym who during vintage calms the choppy seas.

Our Vineyards

Odyssey Marlborough Vineyard

The Odyssey Marlborough Vineyard is ideal for producing top quality wines, as well as being picturesque. It is one of the more elevated vineyards in Marlborough with a north easterly aspect. Soil is permeable silt loam over clay with an impermeable pan at 1m. Annual rainfall is less than 650mm. A dam captures the winter rain for irrigation over the summer. On occasion strong south westerly winds blow through the vineyard just the thing for disease control.

The vineyard has been managed organically for several years and we are now in the system for Biogrow organic certification.

The vineyard grows Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.

The spacing’s are close, and Rebecca and her team do all pruning, vine work and harvesting by hand. There are six different Dijon clones in the Pinot Noir, four clonal variants in the Pinot Gris and two in the Sauvignon Blanc. Different clones perform better under different vintages and seasons. Each clone is harvested separately and fermented on its own to give more blending options. A flock of our own sheep grazes the vineyard, putting paid to heavy machinery compacting the soil. The sheep are our resident weed eaters.

The vineyard has recently been certified organic.

Odyssey Gisborne

Odyssey Gisborne is the most easterly of the wine regions in New Zealand and the first to see the sun in the world!

Odyssey Wines source our Gisborne fruit from a long term contract grower in Hexton, Gisborne. Situated in the Gisborne Golden Triangle this vineyard is one of the oldest in the region. The Chardonnay is the Mendoza clone which gives small berries and concentrated flavour. We do not irrigate over summer as the heavy silt loam and clay of the soil holds moisture.

Gisborne experiences high sunshine hours over summer and is perfect for the Chardonnay grape. Half Gisborne's area is planted in Chardonnay. No surprises then that the city is dubbed 'The Chardonnay Capital of New Zealand'.
