Not an easy grape to grow, Pinot Noir is the red wine grape of Burgundy and is the second most widely planted and picked grape variety in New Zealand, predominantly grown in the cooler southerly wine regions of Wairarapa, Marlborough, Nelson, Waipara, Canterbury and Central Otago. New Zealand yields a Pinot Noir with good colouring and a soft, fruity palate. The wine can be silky smooth with power strength and complexity.
The essence of Pinot Noir is its aromas and flavours of sweet strawberries, raspberries and cherries. With age it develops complex earthy and mushroom characteristics.
Although Pinot Noir earns most of its notoriety from its still, red varietal wine, it’s also a vital ingredient in the production of New Zealand’s best sparkling white wines being produced in Marlborough.
New Zealand Pinot Noir is a premium red wine which has had a quick surge in popularity and quality; it stands tall alongside our world acclaimed Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand’s most produced wine.
