Overview
Askerne “Dr John” Cabernet Sauvignon / Malbec / Cabernet Franc 2021 is a tribute to Dr. John Loughlin, a respected ophthalmologist and former owner of Waimarama Estate Winery. This exceptional blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Malbec, and 6% Cabernet Franc reflects the legacy of outstanding wines crafted under his vision. The grapes from the 2021 vintage were fermented separately and underwent extended post-maceration on skins to enhance richness. After pressing, the wine was aged in oak barriques, where malolactic fermentation occurred and maturation lasted for 12 months. The final blend was then aged in neutral oak for an additional 6 months. With 25% new oak and 25% second-fill oak, this wine achieves a refined balance of complexity and elegance.
Tasting Notes
This wine opens with an ethereal bouquet of sweet perfumed florals and savoury spices, complemented by brooding dark fruits, including plum, blackberry, and cassis. Subtle notes of leather, liquorice, and graphite emerge, adding depth and intrigue. On the palate, the wine is concentrated and flavourful, with superfine tannins and a gentle richness. It delivers a beautifully refined experience, where each element is perfectly integrated, resulting in a harmonious and balanced finish. A wine that reflects both the craftsmanship of the 2021 vintage and the enduring legacy of Dr. John Loughlin.
