Crab Farm Winery
Crab Farm Winery celebrates limited amounts of hand crafted quality produced wine.
Our family concern is situated in Bay View just north of Napier. Being less than 200 metres from the Pacific Ocean provides the vineyard with moderate night temperatures, lessening the chances of frost damage.
The vineyard grows on a site of river metal silt and ex-marine muds. Before the 1931 earthquake, more than half of this area was under estuary tidal waters. This huge natural disaster raised Crab Farm by 9 feet. The opportunity to grow grapes on this site 50 years later was taken up by James and Hamish Jardine.
Crab Farm Vineyards
Here at Crab Farm we have three small hand managed blocks all located within 20 minutes of each other. By having three separate blocks we are able to get the best from various sites throughout Hawke’s Bay.
The Home Block situated onsite at Crab Farm Winery – 12.5 hectares.
This is the original site of Crab Farm, prior to the 1931 earthquake the majority of the farm was wetlands hosting mangroves and tidal crustations like crabs. The vineyard was planted by Hamish and his father Jim Jardine in the early 1980s. Varieties that have excelled from the Crab Farm block include Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Riesling. As a neighbour to the coast the sea moderates the temperature during ripening and also ensures the cooler nights inhibiting the loss of acid. This in turn increases the ripening time resulting in better flavour profiles for aromatic white wines – which are the essence of the vineyard.
Established in 1999 this northwest facing hillside is nicknamed “Pukera” which translate to sunny hill. Terraced growing results in increased sunlight, heat and drainage which results in a high quality wine. This little hot spot is nestled in the Puketitiri Valley and is the site for our red wines. Reds enjoy the heat and terraces ensure that happens. Every vintage since 2001 has been superb.
The newest addition to the Crab Farm family, the Shingle Pit was purchased in 2012. This block is 7 hectares and is split into two vineyards. The site on the left of the picture consists of Merlot, Syrah and Pinotage. The block to the right has Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. The first wines from the Shingle Pit were produced in 2013 which was a stunning vintage adding to the excitement around the new vineyard. The Shingle Pit is located next to the river and as a result the soil is silt over red metal. Centuries of minerals washed down from the Esk River have deposited in this gorgeous frost free site.
