Herzog is a family owned New Zealand winery and restaurant, supported by a unique team of individuals who all share the same values: a passion for wine and food, commitment to excellence and quality, and a love for the great New Zealand environment.
As the name suggests, Hans Herzog’s roots lie in Switzerland where the family has grown wine since 1630. There Hans and Therese owned the successful ‘Taggenberg’ vineyard and restaurant in the Zurich wine country.
Looking for a new challenge, in the mid 1990’s they planted an 11 hectare vineyard bordering the Wairau River here in Marlborough and later moved the winery and Michelin-starred restaurant.
Here Hans has adopted an experimentalist stance, cultivating an eclectic array of varieties, including Arneis, Barbera, Tempranillo and Zweigelt – as well as the more traditional Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The organically-managed vineyard benefits from a warm, dry microclimate and Hans ferments at cool temperatures using wild yeasts, the white wines barrel-fermented in 500 litre oak puncheons, the reds aged for 12-30 months in French oak barriques, creating wines rich in varietal character.
The boutique estate and restaurant is now widely acclaimed as one of the best in New Zealand.

Offered exclusively to our restaurant guests! Now you can retreat to our cosy Rimu Cottage for a stay of complete luxury and seclusion among our vines. The vineyard cottage has a special charm due to its history on the estate and thanks to Therese’s soft touch with the décor. Interior features include antiques, original paintings and a fireplace. Books and a selection of DVD movies add to your relaxed entertainment. Indulge in a five-star haven of luxury with a supreme king size bed and beautifully soft and lustrous cotton sateen bed linens.
Outside, you can relax in deck chairs and take in the panoramic views of the Richmond ranges where the light is always changing, or simply absorb the peacefulness of the private garden.
On arrival you will be greeted with a complimentary fruit bowl, sweet and savoury treats, fresh flowers, tea collection, espresso coffee machine and a fully stocked bar fridge.
Amenities include towelling bathrobes, slippers and exquisite NZ Linden leaves toiletries – all the comforts so appreciated by travellers. You will never want to leave!
Spoil yourself for breakfast! Our chefs will prepare a breakfast basket with home-made goodies for you to enjoy in the privacy of your cottage! You may like to cook a hot breakfast of bacon and organic eggs from our free range chickens. A wide selection of teas are also available in your kitchen.
The cottage is non-smoking but you may indulge on the generous size veranda.
