Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001.
Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy.
With the majestic elephant as our namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds.
The lure of New Zealand was strong, in 2006 Günter Thies moved from Germany to take up the position of Managing Director. A refreshing change from an impressive history of working in established wineries in Oregon, USA and in the Rhein region of Germany.
After graduating with an economics degree followed by a promising career in Finance, Winemaker Steve Skinner knew wine was his true calling. Moving to Hawke’s Bay, Steve studied wine science and worked harvests in Hawke’s Bay, France, California and Canada before securing his dream job at Elephant Hill.
